Like many coaches and entrepreneurs, I started out without much of a clue about how to build my business. Over time, I picked up bits and pieces of the puzzle from reading articles, books, etc. But I still wasn't experiencing the level of success I dreamed about deep down.

It wasn't until I began to seek out the most successful people in my industry, and personally emulate what they were doing that the "fog" began to lift...and the path to my dreams started to quickly unfold before me. 

You see, it's one thing to read about how to be successful. But when you're reading about it, or listening to tapes, or whatever it is...you're only walking away with bits of knowledge. And 9 times out of 10, it's only a "puzzle piece" of the full picture you need to be creating if you want to launch your coaching business to the next level. 

On the other hand, when you align yourself on a personal one-to-one level with the top "players" in your industry, not only do you walk away with all the puzzle pieces clearly laid out in front of you, but you also gain an almost indescribable "power" to emulate and create a similar picture in your own business. You are literally fueled by their success. 

After getting bits and pieces of information, I was able to create the full picture--the seven key elements any coach needs to succeed!  You might've seen these before, taught in various books and programs, but I found that together they work like "magic!" 
 
 

Here are the seven most important principles I learned about being successful in any "special knowledge" industry (coaching, consulting, speaking, etc.):

#1 You must specialize

I wasted almost two years without specializing, while my income stayed below $30,000. I simply didn't know what I was doing wrong! Many coaches resist the idea of specializing, and continue struggling for many months or years! I discovered a very simple way of finding a lucrative coaching niche, and I now teach it to all my clients.

The first time I decided to "package" my expertise into a coaching program, I got seven new clients within just a couple of weeks! Before then, prospects really didn't "get" what I could help them with. Until you get clarity on how you can help your clients, your message (and your bottomline) will suffer. 

The best way to get clear about what you offer is to package your knowledge into repeatable solutions. It will save you a lot of time, and will make your services a lot more attractive to clients.

Most coaches who struggle financially simply sit and wait for clients to call.  The way I operate my business today involves taking small but consistent actions toward self-promotion. The key is to integrate self-promotion into what you already normally do, so it doesn't take extra time!

There is nothing better than coming back from a family vacation, and find that your business generated income while you were away.  This is what gives you peace of mind and allows you to build a real sustainable business. 

I have dozens of products and services that generate passive income for me.  Since each product solves a specific problem,  I also save a lot of time when working with my clients.  This is not difficult to achieve, but you must observe your target clients and create solutions to their problems.

This is something I learned later in my business, but oh, do I wish I would've known this sooner!  There are many ways to create residual income, and if you only tap into 10% of them, you'll never have money worries again. 

Residual income is passive income that builds up over time. Eventually, you'll be receiving checks and bank deposits that didn't require any extra work on your part! (I personally experienced this a year after I decided to specialize.) When you reach this point in your business, that's when you start living the lifestyle you love!

In the world of thousands of "look-alikes," many coaches find themselves lost and unable to stand out. I found two things to be true when it comes to becoming the number one in your field:

   1. Every coach is different, just like every person is different. Many of my clients said that they could never work with any other coach because of the unique abilities I offer.  Many clients said the same thing to other coaches. This simply shows that there are clients for every coach out there!

   2. You must always find ways to be different and to be better. This is not about competition. It's about establishing yourself as the number one (or the ONLY one) in the market to work with! I've seen "average" people rise to success in just a few months or weeks thanks to their creativity and bold ideas! In fact, I've done it multiple times, and each time my income doubled or tripled that year.

When you have just a few clients, running your business is easy. But once you reach a point of an expert status, with clients, products, membership sites, live events and strategic alliances, look out! Your life could be taken over by your business very quickly. 

To avoid this, you must develop systems in your business: systems for working with clients, processing payments, handling e-mail and customer support, publishing articles and a newsletter, running your web sites, and managing your schedule. 

I currently have 3 assistants, an accountant, a programmer, a graphic designer, and even a coaching assistant on my team! This allows me to work no more than 35 hours a week, focus on what I do best (and love doing!), and generate well into six figures in income.
